MILF explained

What Does MILF Mean? And When Is It a Compliment?

What the dictionary says, where the word came from and how to use it well.

The short answer

MILF is a slang acronym for a crude phrase about an attractive mother. Dictionary.com labels it slang and defines it as an attractive older woman, usually a mother, “regarded as a sexual object”. It works as a compliment mainly when the woman has chosen the word for herself.

What does the dictionary say?

The core is an attractive woman, usually a mother, seen in a sexual way. For other slang, see casual dating terms explained.

Dictionary.com
Slang. An attractive older woman, usually a mother, “regarded as a sexual object”. First recorded between 1990 and 1995.
Dictionary.com’s acronym guide
Says the linguist Laurel Sutton documented the word in a 1992 research paper on undergraduate slang, noting that it is offensive and objectifies women.
Wikipedia
Spells out the acronym and traces it to Berkeley slang collected in 1992, which a 1999 film later spread.

Where did the word come from?

Dictionary.com says MILF was first recorded between 1990 and 1995. Wikipedia reports the linguist Laurel A. Sutton as saying it was one of nine words for attractive women gathered from undergraduates in a large Berkeley linguistics class in spring 1992.

The 1999 film American Pie spread it widely, though its screenwriter, Adam Herz, says he did not invent the phrase. A 2007 New York magazine article, quoted on Wikipedia, counted more than 25,000 MILF-branded mugs and T-shirts on Café Press. The word is also closely tied to adult entertainment.

Is a MILF the same as a cougar?

Two labels with different focuses.
WordPoints toDictionary label
MILFA sexually attractive woman, usually a motherSlang (Dictionary.com)
CougarAn older woman who pursues younger partnersInformal in American English, slang in British English (Dictionary.com)

Not quite. MILF is about how a woman is seen; cougar is about who she is after. Dictionary.com defines a cougar as an older woman who seeks out much younger men for sex, and in British English as a woman in her 30s or 40s who actively pursues casual sex with young men. It adds a usage note, from Vocabulary.com, saying that even when meant kindly cougar can offend like any stereotype, so it is best avoided.

When is it a compliment, and when is it not?

MILF is slang for an attractive woman who is a mother, and the catch is that it is usually said by someone else, about her. Wikipedia reports that some media outlets found it offensive to women and suggested WHIP instead, for women who are hot, intelligent and in their prime. A 2014 paper by May Friedman in the journal Atlantis argues that the label objectifies women and props up narrow ideas of motherhood.

So the same word can be a joke between friends, a boast on a profile or a put-down from a stranger. The difference is who says it, and whether she asked.

Rule of thumb: let her use the word first. If it is on her profile, she has chosen the label. If it is not, use her name.
